Tarot card reading has recently undergone a growth of international popularity – and with it, many questions. However, it is not bad to own tarot cards. In fact, tarot cards are completely safe and a great way to work closer with the Divine.
There are many different ways to use tarot cards. Some people use them to read their futures, some use it to interpret specific aspects of their lives… some use them just to have fun! There is no such thing as doing Tarot wrong.
Is It Bad to Own Tarot Cards?
As you can see, there is nothing inherently bad about Tarot cards, or Tarot reading. It was first created as a fun pastime, and as such, there is nothing malevolent about the cards.
Ultimately, all you need to read tarot cards are three qualities:
- Intuition
- Openness
- The ability to understand and interpret symbols
That’s it!
Some people believe that tarot cards call to the spirits, and as such, can be dangerous to own. But this is a misconception – all you need is your own spiritual awareness. No spirits need be involved!
The Use of Tarot Cards for Divination
In 1781, the former French Protestant minister, Antoine Court de Gebelin, published a complex analysis of the Tarot. Within this, he said that the art of Tarot first came from Egyptian priests, connecting the symbolism of the cards to Isis, Osiris, and other Egyptian gods.
Whilst there was no real historical evidence to support this, wealthy Europeans loved this connection to the past and began using Tarot which showed artwork specifically based on de Gebelin’s work.
In 1791, the first Tarot deck specifically made for divination purposes was released.
Bad Cards in Tarot Reading
As you know, there are cards such as “Death”, “The Tower”, and “The Devil” in a Tarot deck, which could be seen as “bad” cards.
However, you must be aware that these should not be taken literally or seen as a scary card – instead, you should consider the meanings behind them.
For example, if you have just left a job, then the Death card could pop up. However, the Death card never comes without a suggestion of a birth – which could mean that you are about to embark on a new job. As such, death does not need to be unwelcome: not should any other “bad” Tarot card.
What to Do with a “Bad” Reading
Whilst there is no such thing as a “bad” card, you may believe that you are in the middle of a “bad” reading. If this really worries you, then there are some things you can do.
- If you get a bad feeling from the cards, you should not go ahead with the reading. Instead, trust your instinct and try resuming the reading at a later time.
- Be careful of future predictions – if anything concerns you, remember that we always have the power to change our future. Nothing is set in stone.
- Before asking for guidance, ask yourself, “what will I do with this answer? Am I ready for all of the possible answers to my question?” From there, you can judge whether or not you would like to continue.
How to Cleanse Tarot Cards
You may want to cleanse your deck before or after a reading, or after receiving a new deck. Cleansing can be used as a form of protection, as a way to reassure yourself that your cards are safe, and as a way to get the most accurate readings.
To cleanse your tarot cards, all you need is to:
- Clear your mind with meditation
- Burn sage or incense and pass each card through the smoke
- Wrap the cards in bay leaves to ward off evil
- Place a crystal on top of the cards
Leave the deck for a short while, and then your cards are cleansed and ready to use!
Conclusion
There is nothing bad about owning tarot cards. The only way in which tarot card reading could become dangerous is if you begin making major life decisions based on an interpretation of the cards.
Instead, be sure to use your cards as a source of information with the ability to guide you. That way, you will be able to get the most out of your cards, and enjoy them for the longest time possible.
